Does world of warcraft have a main story or questline?
So I started playing wow yesterday I made an orc warrior and after doing a couple of quests I got to a point in which I dont know who to talk to, I cant make up the difference between sidequests and main quests, are there even main quests? Whats the goal of this game what should I do or where do I go? Thanks alot!
Part of the problem with understanding the 'main story' is that there are several main stories and questlines, mostly dependant on the various expansions and each zone has it's own questlines and story.
This is not helped by the fact that when you start World of Warcraft you are essentially starting halfway through a story with the oldest (publication order) parts told in the RTS series of games (Warcraft I, II & III) and a now-massive backstory (or Lore) that has grown out of the games.
The links below, are a good place to start for an outline of the story, but here's a brief summary of the early part of the game.
World of Warcraft (revised)
For the early part of WoW, you are largely being introduced to the growing conflict between the Horde and Alliance following the 'Wrath of the Lich King' (3rd expansion), not helped by the recent world-shattering 'Cataclysm' (4th expansion) which has caused incredible damage, and several questlines revolve around dealing with the aftermath of the Cataclysm and fighting the other faction.
(At this point the reworking/replacement of the old content aimed at levels 1-60 by the 'Cataclysm' expansion, produces a snag, the 'Burning Crusade' (2nd expansion, levels 60-70) storyline started BEFORE the storyline you've been playing so far.)
The 'main story' for each expansion is essentially, 'You will be dealing with various problem groups and situations, largely on a zone-by-zone basis leading towards the greatest threat (of that expansion) to your people/world."
